If you’re not already familiar with her crazy colourful designs, prepare to be obsessed.
We talked to the creative and influencer behind the sequinned anatomical hearts and eyeballs that you’ve seen scattered around social media and the infamous “stop teaching girls that boys are mean to them because they like them” jacket. Here’s what she had to say about her epic life in the industry..
Tell us about yourself, your label and how it all came to be:
I’m an embroidery artist based in the UK, I started King Sophie’s World in 2011 because I wanted to create wearable works of art.
I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, the idea of going to being a part of the traditional fashion world did not appeal to me so I made my own.
Describe your personal style in three words:
I think my style looks like I’ve ran through a jumble sale and picked up whatever I like.
Your designs are full of colour and feature anatomical elements such as human hearts or eyeballs, where/what did this obsession stem from?
I’m not sure, I like macabre things, I have a big poster of a skeleton and a anatomical muscle man in my work space.
Who has influenced your style and designs most?
I’m really inspired by the designer Elsa Schiaparelli and the surrealists, especially women like Leonora Carrington and Leonor Fini. I’m also inspired by people like Bjork and Dita Von Teese, their perspective on clothing as an extension of themselves, is how I look at clothing. I also like Alexander McQueen because of the theatrical story telling element to his shows.
Do you have a favourite piece/design from your collection?
I really enjoy making the anatomical heart but I’m most proud of my “stop teaching girls that boys are mean to them because they like them” jacket, as although I felt I was taking a risk in being more personal in my work its actually connected with others the most.
Describe your work place…
I try to keep it minimalist but its always fucking messy!
The last thought that kept you awake at night was…
Do you have any strange and completely irrational fears?
Yeh I do, of having a heart attack. I guess its not that strange but it triggers panic attacks in me a lot because the first time I had a PA many years ago, I thought I was having one!
What’s your idea of heaven?
Being free to do whatever whenever I want, without any restrictions. I wish I had a mansion in the middle of nowhere in Scotland.
When I’m not designing I am…
Spending time with my friends. I work from when I wake up to when I go to sleep and never have a day switched off from work. Its always in the forefront of my mind!
